Summer Skin Savers: Sunscreen, After-Sun Care, AND MORE!

May 26, 2016

IMG_6227Hi Everyone!

Summer is right around the corner and it’s important to protect your skin from the sun to avoid premature aging, skin cancer, fine lines, wrinkles, and sun spots. My favourite sunscreen, tanning and after-sun brands are Sun BumHawaiian Tropic and Australian Gold because they smell so amazing. All the products I’m mentioning in this post (except the Josie Maran product) smell amazing and have a coconut/tropical smell because that is my all-time favourite scent in the world so I buy any product that has that kind of scent.

I usually start the summer off with an SPF 30 sunscreen and then as my skin develops a bit more colour and is less prone to burning I will work my way down to an SPF 15 sunscreen near the end of August.

For my face I have been using the Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 47 and Sun Bum SPF 30 Face Stick . The Josie Maran product is quite thick but I can tell it’s protecting my face from the sun and it works fine under makeup. The Josie Maran product has no scent which is nice because some face sunscreens have a strong sunscreen type of smell to them so I’m glad this product does not and you can really feel the product working and sinking into your skin. On days that I don’t plan on wearing anything on my face other than some waterproof mascara I like to consistently reapply the Sun Bum Face Stick to keep my face protected especially on days that I am in and out of the water. During the summer if I don’t consistently apply sunscreen to my face after being in the water and out in the sun the freckles on my face become a lot darker and I get a line of freckles on my upper lip that resembles a mustache, not cute.

IMG_6223For the rest of my body I alternate between Sun Bum products and Australian Gold products. Mine are a little beat up because they were very well used last summer, being a lifeguard during the summer at an outdoor pool causes you to go through a lot of sunscreen and unfortunately a lot of aloe as well for those nasty sunburns. I use the Sun Bum SPF 30 Original Sunscreen Lotion and SPF 15 Original Sunscreen Lotion, Sun Bum SPF 30 Original Spray Sunscreen and SPF 15 Original Spray Sunscreen, and Australian Gold Spray Gel with Bronzer – SPF 15. I’ve found that the Sun Bum sunscreen products last better being in and out of the water without having to reapply as frequently whereas the Australian Gold sunscreen loses a lot of its power after being in the water (all these products are supposed to be water-resistant). But I do like using the Australian Gold sunscreen on days I don’t need something water resistant because it has a bronzer in the product which makes my skin appear slightly darker throughout the day (I also apply this product to my face which makes it appear slightly darker as well to match the rest of my body).

I know that it is so dangerous to tan and expose your skin unprotected to the sun but I do occasionally tan outside for short periods of time. The products I use to tan are the Australian Gold Bronzing Dry Oil Spray and Hawaiian Tropic Oil Spray – SPF 4 (which I can’t find on their website for some reason). I don’t really like the texture of the Hawaiian Tropic tanning oil on my skin and I find that the Australian Gold tanning oil doesn’t leave a residue on my skin so I much prefer that product.

So I have tried a lot of different after-sun lotions and aloe gels because I have really fair skin and burn super easily. I regularly get sun poisoning which is a terrible feeling but for some reason I sit in the sun and let it happen at least once a summer because I think I’m going to get a tan that way but it never happens. Sun poisoning is sort of like heat stroke except I’m not dehydrated I’ve just gotten way too much sun that day, look it up, it’s a real thing. I try to keep on top of applying after-sun lotions and gels to keep my skin hydrated and avoid peeling and help it heal on days that I get burnt. I don’t have pictures of all my favourite products because I finished most of them last summer and haven’t repurchased them yet because Canada has only just started getting some good summer weather the past two weeks. My favourite after-sun products are the Hawaiian Tropic Lime Coolada After Sun Moisturizer, Hawaiian Tropic Mango and Cocoa Butter After Sun Moisturizer (I can’t find this product on their website), Hawaiian Tropic Coconut Papaya Shimmer Effect After Sun Moisturizer (also can’t find this product on their website), and Solarcaine Medicated Lidocaine Gel (for extra bad sunburns, I also keep mine in the fridge which feels amazing on hot and sore burned skin). If you have any other after-sun product suggestions please let me know in the comment section below, I always like trying new products!
